The Institute for Ocular Microsurgery and Science (IOMS) is a non-profit, educational resource institute with expertise in ophthalmology that includes scientific, clinical, and administration/practice management. The mission of the Institute is to provide the healthcare business expertise and clinical support necessary for ophthalmology practitioners to optimize patient outcomes, as well as practice revenue and profitability.
With an emphasis on practice and outcomes management, IOMS has several target audiences for the ophthalmology-based education that is developed by the group. Within ophthalmology, there are different subspecialty groups that require different educational thrust, including retina, cataract/refractive, general ophthalmology, optometry, nursing, technicians, and administrative staff. Through its board members and expert-based working groups, IOMS brings expertise in each of these areas to the education that is developed.
By establishing and documenting an educational need in ophthalmology, direction is established and a specific curriculum is developed. Various formats to the dissemination of the material can be applied. CME/CE, peer-reviewed publication, certification programs, and non-accredited educational programs are all options.
IOMS has a support infrastructure to allow for turnkey tactical implementation of live meetings, ranging from hundreds or thousands of attendees in large-format meetings to small-format programs. Web-based programming includes live webcast capabilities and Web-based materials of various formats, including video and podcasting. Full publication capabilities include a range of custom publication formats, peer-reviewed journals, and textbooks—all available in electronic format as well.
